I would have given this 4 1/2 stars if I could because it is NOT grain free; however, I've found it to be a very high-quality food with high-quality ingredients, and an excellent option for my 14-year-old Siamese mix with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It was a heck of a time finding a food he could eat and when I called the company with questions, they were upfront and honest, and gave me exceptional customer service. Unfortunately for my cat and me, his IBD is severe enough to be life-threatening and he is very sensitive to almost everything in most cat foods on the market. Felidae Chicken and Rice is one of the two foods that works for him. He does not have any symptoms on this food, and is healthy and active.
A little background: Years ago, my cat had urine crystallization when he was very young. His old vet put him on Prescription Diet C/D dry. Years later, I started learning more about cat food and was appalled at what I learned about ingredients and started looking for other options to the C/D. I talked to our new vet and after a lot of research, I switched to Wellness because I wanted a grain-free wet food. Wellness foods are exceptional and I highly recommend them. As he got older, my cat developed IBD. [No, I do not think that feeding him Wellness had anything to do with developing the condition. I honestly feel it was from previous years of feeding him the poor ingredient quality C/D.] When he diagnosed my cat with IBD, the vet said that the standard practice was to put him on Prescription Diet Z/D, but that there were other healthier, less expensive options out there I just had test them out and see what would work. I did more research, tried a lot of foods, and found two that he could eat: Natural Balance Limited Ingredient (which is grain free) and Felidae Chicken and Rice. I went with the grain-free Natural Balance, but I was laid off in budget cutbacks and needed to go with a less expensive food. I turned to the Felidae Chicken and Rice in 13-ounce cans. [He could not eat the Felidae grain-free foods because lamb and fish triggered the IBD.]
Although I will switch back to the grain-free Natural Balance when I am economically comfortable and stable again, this food has been a lifesaver for him when I could not afford the food I prefer.
